‘Whoohoo’ for NO MORE ROADWORKS!

Traffic is fantastic! I think out of all the wonderful, exciting things about the FIFA World Cup 2010, I have been looking forward to NO ROADWORKS the most!

What a difference an extra lane makes, although I am a little worried by the fact that the general population doesn’t seem to know how to drive on a 4 lane highway. For some reason people think that there are now 3 lanes especially made for everyone driving between 80 and 100 km/h and 1 lane for anyone driving above 100 km/h.

And this would be okay if we were a patient people, but alas, we are not, so the effect is just that there are now a whole lot of cars weaving in the traffic, going between 120 and 160 km/h. This could make for some interesting car accidents and an increase in our wonderfully high death toll.

There are just so many more people (since the roadworks began) who don’t grasp the ‘keep left’ concept. I can’t understand why, I mean it is the simplest concept out of all of them. I also noticed that nobody really makes a big deal of it because everyone says, “well they shouldn’t be driving so fast anyway.” That is so beyond the point. Someone driving 120km/h is just as dangerous as someone driving 140 km/h. What do you think the difference in percentage survival rate is between the two in a head on collision? Yip, you guessed it. Not much! But if you look at the chances of causing an accident while weaving through traffic, as opposed to driving in one lane? There, you will see a difference.

If you stay out of their way and in the two lanes on the left, then they won’t have to endanger anyone’s life (except each others maybe), and they can get where ever it is that is so important and leave the rest of us out of it. So the way I see it, 80 km/h in the far left lane, 100km/h in the next lane to the right, 120km/h in the next lane to the right and anything above that in the far right lane. Now, obviously there are idiots that don’t understand this, and trucks that don’t care. So by all means, overtake on the right, but just for the love of all that is good, go back to the left once you have overtaken!

Okay, that is my driving lesson for today!!

Oh, so yesterday I was reading my June Issue of Cosmo and they had some of the sexy men coming over to SA for the Soccer. I have now decided that my second team will be the US. My reason : Carlos BOCANEGRA

But, of course, don’t worry, Ian. My heart still belongs to you

Silly Diagram for the Stupid People

Okay, so I know I moan about this a lot, but I cannot help it. It has been almost 3 weeks and SANRAL hasn’t done anything about it!

The traffic between Diepkloof Interchange and Maraisburg, on the N1 North, has become a nightmare and it’s not the traffic that grates me, nearly as much, as the fact that it’s for NO GOOD REASON!

I already hate the fact that they take away lanes for no apparent reason but when they take away lanes and then give them back, only to take them away again, it is just ridiculous!

Here is a silly diagram I made to explain this concept to SANRAL: (Note: This is not in any way ‘to scale’… it is just for descriptive purposes!)

Now you’ll see that in the first picture the lanes merge (this happens twice just after the Soweto Highway off ramp) and then after about 1km, the third lane reappears. This would be grand… if they didn’t take the right lane away after about another km! (Just before the bridge at Maraisburg.)

Now, if you take a look at the second picture you’ll see that there is a better option – an option that will actually decrease the traffic! Wait for it….. Wait for it….. Don’t open the third lane again – just keep it at two and then we won’t have the traffic of merging again!! (OMG! What a revelation!)

No seriously, it’s very frustrating having to leave before 6 in the morning so that I don’t have to get stuck in this traffic for over an hour every morning. Especially considering that the only reason it merges into 2 lanes in the first place is because they have gouged out the tar from the second lane on the left (tar that they put there not so long ago, might I add). Does it seriously take 3 weeks to re-tar a strip of road??

Okay, sorry about the ranting again, but it really is hard to write about other, more pleasant things, when you have to drive in that rubbish every morning!

Anyhoo… I hope that my silly diagram at least got a laugh out of someone :)

HaPpY ThUrSdAy EvErYoNe!

*Whoohoo for 4 day weeks!!*

Kulula Ads Cause a Stir

I had to share this – you have gotta love Kulula!

So this was the initial ad that they published:

It’s cute, right? But nothing really great. Well that is until they got into trouble with FIFA for using the term “South Africa”, a stadium, soccer and our national flag. This was their response:

OMG! It’s brilliant really. All FIFA did was create more publicity for the campaign! I love it when stupidity comes back and bites people in the ass!

ENOUGH ALREADY!!

I don’t know about everyone else but I have just had enough of the utter lawlessness and inconsideration that clouds this country!

I just got home after spending 2 hours in traffic (Yes – in the middle of the afternoon, for no reason other than because SANRAL felt like taking away 3 lanes of the 4 lane highway – they weren’t even doing anything!!) and during this time, all I could think about was how ‘we’ (the people of this country) just let it happen. We let the powers that be (whether it’s the government, big corporations, or the arrogant, self centered idiots all around us) have the control!

You know, in any other country, the people would be up in arms if they had to spend any amount of time stuck in traffic for roadworks. In any other country, if they take away more than one lane at a time the people are up in arms! The typical defensive question here would be: “But how would it get done then?” Well…. how about planning ahead? Or is that  too much of a foreign concept for people to understand? It is supposed to take long to change a highway infrastructure!!! We’ve had approx. 8 years (I stand to be corrected) to get ready for the FIFA World Cup – yet they only started with the highways a year ago.

If you can remember, it actually started off pretty well. I even used to commend SANRAL for the great work they were doing. They seemed to never take away more than one lane and they never worked in peak time. Now, as the clock ticks down to the World Cup, they don’t seem to care.

Now, I know this may seem like a small problem in a big pool (or should I say ocean) of problems in this country, but that is the biggest problem. We (as the people) except all of these ‘small’ things because there is always some ‘bigger’ problem. We say, “What’s some traffic when our Youth Leader is visiting criminals in jail, or when people are dying everyday because our health care system is pathetic?!” But the thing is – we should not except any of it! We should all be up in arms! And when I say up in arms, I do NOT mean, toy-toying, throwing rocks at people, burning things down or causing HAVOC!!! What I do mean, is that we should all band together (and when I say all, I mean all! I don’t care what your social standing or race is!) and say ENOUGH! We should have groups, organizations, that stand up for us. Organizations that are not run by, or in cahoots with, the government.

Take this Eskom fiasco as an example. If we want to be heard we should organize a strike – a ‘stay-away’ if you will. What would Eskom do if we all just didn’t use electricity for 3/4 days? Or if we all just didn’t pay our bill? How much money would they loose? Wouldn’t they then be forced to listen to us?

Yes, It’ll be inconvenient and even unpleasant but it will get our point across. I think it’s time that the people take the power back. I think it’s time that we remind all the ‘powers that be’ that the only reason they are where they are is because of us. The only reason Eskom can pay their CEO’s millions, is because we pay for electricity. The only reason Jacob Zuma is in power is because we voted for him. The only reason these road works are happening is because we pay taxes. I am so tired of these ‘powerful’ people or corporations thinking that they can get away with anything!

And you know what the worst part is – if we don’t do something soon, we are going to end up just like Zim. And it’ll be our fault, because we let it happen. Because , instead of us all standing up for what is right, we are all just saying “well if they can do it, I can do it too!” And if we are all corrupt and doing illegal things (yes, this includes the simple things like driving in the yellow lane) then where does that leave us? How would you come back from that?

This is not a free for all!!!

Roads + Rain = Traffic Disaster

Does anyone have any idea why it is, that as soon as it rains people forget how to drive?

I can’t understand it. I mean, you expect to get to work later than usual because you have to drive slower, but to get to work 40 minutes later is just ridiculous.

Once again, the people at the Montecasino Boulevard – William Nicol Drive Intersection decided against following the rules so there was no way to turn into Montecasino Boulevard (unless you were driving a bulldozer or a monster truck – which I am seriously considering as my next choice of vehicle!).

I instead decided to take Witkoppen and go around the other way, only to find that traffic on Witkoppen was hardly moving! Although it was better because at least the people weren’t being retarded.

Well anyway, seeing as 2010 is supposed to be a positive year (I decided this on New Years Eve), I had better stop moaning, you know, with the law of attraction and all!

Hmmm… ok I found a positive – at least I had Gareth Cliff and the Team to keep me smiling!

THANKS 5FM :-D

Have a Happy Wednesday everybody!!!

Learner Drivers

Has everyone noticed the influx of learner drivers – well cars with red L’s on the back – on the roads recently?

Well I now know why! Apparently in South Africa, if you stick the red L on your back window you are allowed to drive! Now, don’t get me wrong, this is illegal, but for some reason a great deal of our population are convinced that this is how it works, and to be hones I don’t even think half of them no that they are doing something wrong.

You know which cars I am talking about… it’s usually an old UNO or a Tazz… even a Mazda 323, with dark tinted windows and a big red L. They are usually driving in the middle or fast lane of the highway, going about 80km/h (100km/h if you are lucky) and they are holding on to their steering wheels for dear life!

Now my question is, How does this happen? How is it that there are people that think that this is how it works? Where are the traffic cops when it comes to them? All the Metro seem to do nowadays is hide in the bushes, waiting for speeding cars, or setting up roadblocks at inappropriate times, causing unnecessary traffic!

Ok, I know I am moaning again… what can I say? The holidays are past now and it’s back to the 100km stretch a day…. you can’t blame me for thinking about cars and traffic, can you?? LOL

Happy Tuesday Peeps!

Letter to SANRAL

Dear SANRAL

I understand that the project you have undertaken, to improve the roads that we rely on for almost everything, is indeed very complicated, but I want to let you in on something I have learned while driving through the maze you have created for us.

We, drivers, are like sheep. We all generally follow the route that the majority are following, but as with sheep you get the rebellious ones, the ones that just don’t follow the rest, the ones who try to get away, or get ahead. These ones need to be forced to follow. You see, they don’t have the same thinking capacity as the majority. They don’t have the logic to see that by following and listening to the rules you get where you want to go faster, without disturbing every one else. They aren’t considerate enough to understand this. They are the kind that just do as they please, without caring about consequences.

Now, sometimes, these rebellious ones, cause havoc and stir up the anger in the majority of us. This often causes a type of chase and sometimes a ramming incident will ensue. This endangers all of us followers, who are just trying to get from A to B alive , happy and within a specific time frame.

So what am I getting at, you ask? Well, I am asking that you please, please, please,  make sure to herd them properly, to please send this message to all the herdsman, to inform them that barriers need to be in place in order to prevent the rebellious ones from skipping the queue, through outside lanes, thereby reeking havoc.

Correct herding is imperative for the majority of our sanity’s! Please keep that in mind while you take away lanes and create traffic that wasn’t there previously. Help us appreciate these changes, help us accept the traffic, by not leaving openings for the rebellious, stupid ones to take advantage.

Thank you.

Warmest Regards,

Weeball

I Have A Message!

This goes out to all the people I saw on the roads this morning…. yes, that includes the dumbasses who were driving in the construction lane and all the ones that usually get a fright when they realize the lanes are merging and then have to be in another lane, etc….. but mainly, this message goes out to the Putco Bus Driver, the chicky in her Renault Scenic and all the other stupid folk who were present at the Montecasino Boulevard – William Nicol intersection at approximately 07h40 this morning….

Ok, I feel better now :)

HAPPY FRIDAY EVERYONE!!!

P.S. Tonight is the big night!!! Whoohoo for New Moon!!

South African Roads

While driving to work, at snails pace, through the endless traffic, I started thinking about why there is traffic. I mean, if the far left lane is merging with the middle lane, then surely the far right lane should still be moving?

Upon closer inspection though, I realized why, the idiots (I say idiots because they cannot seem to think further than the car in front of them and sometimes, even that is asking too much) will drive in the middle lane, ignoring the merging lane signs. As soon as they get to the point of merging they proceed to realize that there is a car next to them wanting to come into their lane. Upon realizing this they either think, “oh, let me move over” or “What the hell, I’m getting out of this lane”. They then push their way into the far right, where the normal folk, who noticed the merging lane two weeks ago when they first put it up, are queuing either patiently or not so patiently.

Now, to think, if these idiots didn’t do that and maybe planned ahead, or were patient enough to understand the concept of the one car, one car rule, then maybe traffic would just be a bit better. I figure that these idiots, and the ones that drive up yellow lanes or construction lanes, are the ones that moan the most about the traffic and yet they are the cause for most of it.

This all got me thinking further, why is it that South African roads are so dangerous? I mean, we’re not the only country with idiots, taxi’s and roadworks. I know we are a 3rd world country, with a 1st world road infrasructure (well in JHB, at least) but even in India, where there are people every where and cows in the roads, there aren’t even nearly as many accidents.

Is it arrogance? Or  naivety? Would things be different if we didn’t expect the other people on the road to follow the rules? If we were constantly expecting the idiot to pull out in front of us, or the truck to come flying around the corner, or the women in front of us to break way too late?

Would being prepared help? To be honest, I really do think so. I think that being so unaware of our surroundings and by expecting everyone around us follow the rules, is what causes accidents. I don’t think we take enough responsibility. We blame that taxi, that truck or that asshole without thinking about what exactly we do on the roads. Or are you different? Where the rules don’t apply, because you know what you are doing.

Well I can tell you this, no one wants to get into an accident and that taxi, truck or asshole also thinks he knows what he is doing.

*WARNING* I’m Feeling Incredibly Negative!

Yesterday ANC Youth League Chair, Thebe Meeko said, with regards to Professor Johnathan Jansen (rector of the University of the Free State), “He should be shot and killed because he is a racist!” Seriously?? We cannot afford to have another idiot in the ANC Youth League, talking utter crap!

Even if he is a complete racist, which there is no proof of, does that really mean he should die??? Racism is disgusting but to be honest it’s near as bad as killing a man, or raping a women or a baby. You don’t hear people picketing for all those sick demented murderer’s and rapists to be killed!

I mean, you’ve got Donovan Moodley saying he should be released early because he only killed Leigh Matthews because he had to – he didn’t want to. (FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! It doesn’t matter, you idiot, you chose to kill her!! No matter what your reasons behind it were!!!!).

And what about the corrupt officials, should they be shot and killed?? They are stealing our money. They are allowing people to starve, all the while they sit, as fat cats, sucking up all our hard earned money! But no, they do not deserve to be killed! As humans everyone has the right to life and I agree with that. Then this stupid idiot just stands up there and gets the idea to shoot an innocent man into the heads of all the other stupid people! What is this world coming too??

It’s hate speech. I really hope that someone does something about this guy! He is a complete TWAT!! I am so tired of all of this crap. It’s too much. I am really battling to be positive about this country at the moment and as much as I love it, the people, the weather, the braais, the cultures, the smiles, the memories, the potential, the beauty… I hate the corruption, the idiots, the utter disrespect for everyone else, the power hungry fools, the terrible service delivery, the thievery from the poor, the suffering, the anger, the hate speech, the racism, high call costs, high electricity costs, crap internet connectivity – it is almost impossible to ignore all of it!

I hate being so negative but sometimes I just can’t force myself to focus on the good, to see the potential. Sometimes I just want to run away screaming!!

Sorry for ranting guys, I’m just having a negative day. I will feel better about it all soon, I’m sure!

I need chocolate…. and lots of it!!
